Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell
The first English opera to remain in the standard repertoire, this three-act tragedy by the brilliantly gifted Henry Purcell was premiered in London in the summer of 1688. The libretto, based on a play by Nahum Tate, is derived from the fourth book of Virgil's Aeneid, telling of a legendary Queen of Carthage and a Trojan refugee. A monumental work of the Baroque stage, Dido and Aeneas is considered to be Purcell's only true opera.
